On the volcanic island of Santiago, Cape Verde, a small group of women stand as the last custodians of a centuries-old ceramic tradition, historically passed from mother to daughter. Using earth collected from the mountains to form vessels that sustain their families, identities, and culture, the practice shapes a relationship with clay that extends far beyond craftsmanship, carried by generations of knowledge.

In a climate where migration and modernization are transforming the region, while technology rapidly reshapes the way we create, this way of life and the island’s artisanal clay-molding techniques face a fragile future. Connecting with the women through intimate observations of their daily labor, Barcelona-based directors Cayetano González and Julieta Lasarte explore the profound bond between them and a tradition at risk of disappearing for the short documentary Filhas do Barro – translated as Daughters of Clay. Shot entirely on film with a small crew, the film embraces a slower process that echoes the rhythm and care of the artisans themselves, documenting the socioeconomic and cultural potential of these women’s work to ensure the continuity of their craft.
